i'm a 5 '3 foul-mouthed emo/hippy chick who switches between emo full black outfits and colorful in-your-face fits and i'm here to help you plan the elopement that's as badass as you are!
Planning a wedding or elopement in the Colorado mountains is unforgettable. With stunning peaks, alpine lakes, and wildflower meadows, the scenery feels straight out of a dream. But Colorado weather can be unpredictable, and the elevation brings its own challenges. That’s why knowing what to pack for your Colorado mountain wedding or elopement is so important. Being prepared allows you to relax and enjoy the moment without stress. Here’s how to make sure nothing gets left behind.
A week before your elopement, handle the final details. Make sure you’ve paid your vendors and prepared any cash tips. Place those tips in labeled envelopes for easy handoffs. This small step keeps your day running smoothly and shows appreciation. If you’re using a ceremony script or having someone officiate, share it with them now. Everyone will feel more confident knowing what to expect. Next, gather your wedding attire and accessories. Lay everything out—dress or suit, jewelry, rings, undergarments, and shoes. Try it all on to ensure a perfect fit. Then pack a garment steamer, a lint roller, and garment bags to keep things neat and photo-ready.
Colorado mountain weather can change quickly. Sunny skies can turn to wind, rain, or even snow—sometimes all in one day. So pack with flexibility in mind. Bring layers like a warm coat, gloves, and a base layer in case it gets cold. Even in summer, mornings and evenings can be chilly. Comfortable shoes are a must. If your elopement includes a hike or rugged path, wear hiking boots or sturdy sneakers! Heels are strongly discouraged in the wild. You might also want a second pair for photos or celebrating afterward. Pack leggings, a cozy outfit for before or after your ceremony, and a waterproof jacket—just in case.
An elopement-day emergency kit can save the day. You can buy one online or build your own with essentials. Pack nausea medicine, Tylenol or ibuprofen, Liquid IV packets, and allergy relief. High elevations may trigger dizziness or headaches, especially if you’re not used to them. Also include safety pins, band-aids, bobby pins, fashion tape, stain remover wipes, and sunscreen. Bug spray and a mini sewing kit are great to have, too. Having this kit on hand gives you peace of mind and lets you focus on the fun.
One day before your elopement, visit the county Clerk and Recorder’s office to pick up your marriage license. Check the office hours ahead of time—some locations close on weekends or random weekdays. Bring a valid ID, and make sure both of you are present if required. A fun bonus? In Colorado, you can self-solemnize your marriage. That means you don’t need an officiant or witnesses. You can legally marry each other, just the two of you, surrounded by the mountains.
The Colorado mountains are full of beauty, but they can be unpredictable. That’s why it’s essential to know what to pack for your Colorado mountain wedding or elopement. From weather gear and hiking shoes to your marriage license and emergency kit, the right packing list will make your day smooth and stress-free. Whether you’re hiking to an alpine lake or saying “I do” on a scenic overlook, being prepared allows you to stay present and soak in every moment. The better you pack, the more freedom you’ll have to focus on what matters—celebrating your love in one of the most awe-inspiring places on earth.

“For us, Erica was the ONLY option! I hate taking photos (and our elopement was the first time we ever took professional photos) and she was so good at directing us as well as making sure we were enjoying our time. Also, she provided us with sooo many suggestions while traveling and gave us an awesome elopement checklist to follow leading up to the big day. “
